What’s it all about?

Ahoy matey.  Winter is coming… tis the perfect time to drink…RUM!  Why yes me hearties. After all, rum is the tropical sun of the Caribbean converted into sugar, captured in barrels to age.  But to get the rum to our glass, those barrels have to sail the high seas through cold stormy rain and high winds.  Join us to explore aged rum cocktails – dark side of sunshine in a bottle.

We have pillaged recipes for some dark rum cocktails and best of all, you’re invited to share in the booty with tastings of the grog.  Shiver me timbers what are you waiting for? Don’t be left high and dry on this special winter edition of Shaken and Stirred.

What will we cover?

In this special winter edition, learn the basics for equipping your home with the necessary tools and knowledge to make some great winter cocktails.  Advice from a cocktail aficionado on how to set up for cocktails anywhere – at home or even while travelling – so you can share your skills (and drinks) with friends and family.

You will learn key cocktail techniques to confidently approach selected aged rum cocktails and take home the recipes to impress your friends, your family, your date and yourself!

The class will give you the building blocks necessary to setup a good home bar and introduce categories of tools and equipment useful for making cocktails, and show examples of different glassware and flexible options for serving drinks.

Also you will learn to:

  • Understand what’s essential and what you can live without (or substitute) to start making drinks on a budget

  • De-mystify cocktail jargon

  • List of places to pick up tools and supplies

  • Recommendations for further self guided learning (books, websites, YouTube channels)

NB: This class will be in Australian English and pirate speak will be kept to a minimum.

Who will be teaching?

Simon began adult life disliking alcohol in all forms after repeated unsuccessful attempts to be friends with beer, rum/coke and tequila sunrises.  But a chance encounter with a vodka, lime and soda was his gateway drink into a classic daiquiri at the famed cocktail bar Der Raum.  Since then Simon become an avid barfly visiting cocktail bars around the world in Europe, America, Asia, NZ and Australia as well as being good friends with gin, rum, whiskey and wheat beers.  More recently Simon has been creating at-home cocktail experiences and teaching friends to make tasty drinks all around the world whether it’s a Melbourne balcony, a villa in Tuscany, an apartment in Paris or on a sailing boat in San Francisco Bay.
