What’s it all about?

Konnichiwa Melbourne! Just as taxes and death are a certainty of life, so too is the art of the dance. Originating from the land of Godzilla and sushi comes the Japanese dance sensation known as Awa Odori.

Awa Odori is one of the largest dance festivals in Japan. Awa is the old name for Tokushima, Shikoku, and Odori means dance. Endearingly we call Awa Odori “Fool’s Dance”! This nickname comes from the lyrics of the dance song, which translates to, “The dancers are fools, the spectators are fools, both are fools alike so, why don’t you dance together?”

The deceptively simple movements are accompanied by an up-tempo two-beat rhythm, which is created by Japanese traditional musical instruments. Dancers wear Yukata, casual summer Kimonos.

We cordially invite you to embrace the spirit and fun of the ‘Fool’s Dance’.

What will we cover?

Learn the basic techniques to get you started in Awa Odori. We will cover some basic footwork patterns first, then the posture, arms and hands follow.

You will also learn a bit about the musical structure and poetry of Awa Odori. Video clips will be used to show you great dancers from the most Awa Odori fanatic regions in Japan. You will share “Yatto sa” (call out)!

Participants will have the opportunity to work with a fan as well as practice typical female and male character gestures found in this unique and beautiful art form.

Who will be teaching?

NahoNaho started learning Awa Odori in Tokushima, Shikoku when she was 5 years old. In the last 2 years, she has taught beginners and run some special workshops for kids and adults in Melbourne.

She has also choreographed and performed at various cultural events, including Japan festival and the international music festival. She is absolutely passionate about Awa Odori and loves to promote this dance to the world. She truly believes Awa Odori is her life’s work.
