What’s it all about?

Character is the unique place where the audience and the writer interact. As Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad fames said, there are “a finite number of plots, but there are an infinite number of characters.” Stories come and go but what we remember the most are the characters at the heart of these journeys. This class is an introduction to creating characters which satisfy both you and an audience. We’ll analyse your favourite characters to see what motivates them and help you to draw upon your own innate understanding of character to create living breathing characters you can put into your writing.

What will we cover?

We will be covering:

  • What makes some characters compelling and others not?
  • How to create empathy with a character
  • The relationship between back story and action
  • In class activities that help with dialogue, character objectives and traits
