What’s it all about?

How much do you know about asylum seekers, refugees and boat people?

The current global humanitarian crisis is a complicated subject, but in this introductory workshop we’ll be breaking it down and busting some of the myths. We’ll consider the refugee and asylum seeker crisis, neatly outlining the current processes, to determine why and how people seek asylum, and what Australia’s responsibility is!

What will we cover

Right now, more people are seeking asylum than at any point since World War II. But what is happening in the world that has caused this? In this class we will answer the following questions:

  • Why do people seek asylum?
  • How do you seek asylum?
  • What is the criteria to be recognised as a refugee?
  • What is the difference between a refugee and an asylum seekers?
  • What is the UN’s role?
  • What is Australia’s role?
  • What is Australia’s current policy?
  • What has Australia’s policy been in the past?
  • How do we compare to the rest of the world?

Plus, we will work out what will happen with the upcoming closure of Manus Island, and what it really means. Plus, there will be time for other questions that you are burning to ask.
