What’s it all about?

Put your crafty Christmas cap on for a fun evening stitching quirky, colourful and eco-friendly decorations from upcycled felted wool and pre-loved haberdashery.

What we will cover?

After a bit of show and tell to get you inspired, you’ll get a quick lesson in sashiko stitching – a simple, and great looking technique for sewing and embellishing your decorations.

Then we’ll get straight into the making. Choose from a lovely selection of felted wool pieces, vintage fabric remnants, trims and other festive recycled bits and bobs and start cutting and stitching. We’ll provide a few templates to get you started or just have a play and see what you come up with! Don’t worry if you don’t have any sewing skills – we will teach you the basics.

Threads, pins, needles, scissors, inspiration and pre-loved textiles and haberdashery will be provided. Bring along any vintage or op shop trims, braids, bells, buttons or sparkly bits you might have in your stash that you would like to use, along with your own sewing kit if you have one. Everyone is welcome!

Who will be teaching?

Gaye Naismith (aka Gaye Abandon) is a lifelong sewer (machine and hand), a sometimes seamstress, a textile upcycler and a teacher with a sewing and upcycling school in Footscray. She avoids buying new fabrics and clothes, preferring instead to make and mend stuff and to teach others how to do the same.
