What’s it all about?

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) – most of us have heard of it and it sounds like a lot of fun? It must be because it’s been popular for decades!

D&D has been having a resurgence of popularity in recent times. But unlike most board games, the rules are vast and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of the player’s manual. It can be daunting, even intimidating. But never fear aspiring adventurer – we have just the class for you!

Your friendly DM, Miek Nelligan, is here to take you step by step through the process and ready to launch into your first adventure! She will guide you through the steps of character creation. You will also learn some of the key jargon of D&D and some terrible jokes thrown in for good measure.

What will we cover?

In this class, you will be guided through the steps on how to create a level one Dungeons & Dragons character (5th edition).

We will cover the following areas:

  • A brief introduction to D&D 5th Edition
  • How to read the character sheet
  • Keywords and their meanings
  • Stats! What they mean, and how to use them
  • An introduction to character types
  • Backstory
  • Finding a game to join!

What will you need?

  • The D&D 5E Character sheet* (can be accessed digitally or printed out beforehand) – a copy will be sent with your Zoom link
  • Your trusty imagination!

Who will be teaching?

Miek Nelligan is a passionately creative, absurdly geeky, aspiring bard who has been playing D&D for a number of years now. She has spoken at PAX Australia about the benefits of D&D in the primary school classroom and has racked up a frightening amount of hours engaged in her favourite fantasy RPG in 2020.

She has also run a variety of D&D games, including a table at Melbourne International Games Week in partnership with Arcanacon. Miek loves the creative outlet that D&D has provided and can’t wait to share this never-ending world of possibility with others! You can follow Miek on her Instagram
