What’s it all about?
Do you remember Spirographs?
Remember rolling a four-colour-biro around in a simple circle and being amazed by the patterns produced? Well it turns out the proper name for those patterns is ‘hypotrochoid’, and there is quite a bit of accessible maths behind the mark making. In this class we will cover the maths while we spirograph, giving us two ways to have a great time.
What will we cover?
Each attendee will get their own modern Spirograph-type kit – the Hypotrochoid Art Set – and we’ll play with those as we go along.
On the maths side of things, we’ll ask why the circles of different sizes give different patterns, what the patterns all have in common, and why they are related to the movement of the solar system.

Who will be teaching?
Tom Ding was raised on a diet of sums and spirographs in the UK. After finishing his degree in Maths a few years ago, he now works in advertising, but still feels the pull of both the spirograph and the sums. In this class he’s excited to get you excited about them. Tom is also part of the team that runs Laneway Learning.
