What’s it all about?
Ohhh the wonders of Melbourne and its distinct style! Amazing street art in hidden laneways, Flinders Station and its clocks and the Yarra River to name just a few. But also Little Audrey (the Skipping Girl Vinegar sign), “The Public Purse” in granite outside H&M in Bourke Street Mall, dim sim platters, the single origin coffee and maybe a slight preference for black.
We are all missing our favourite parts of the wonderful city of Melbourne. So let’s think about the icons you associate with Melbourne and together draw, ink and watercolour our own ‘stay-at-home still-life”. It could be a smashed avo on toast, the Cow Up a Tree in Docklands, a coffee at your favourite cafe, the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building – anything you like! Emilie will guide you through the process, offering tips and advice on how to use watercolours for observational illustration.
What will we cover?
This beginner painting class will focus on using watercolour and illustration skills to recreate your favourite Melbourne icons.
We will cover:
- Observation drawing and modern still life approaches
- Different styles of compositions
- Watercolour paint basics
- Drawing and watercolouring your own Melbourne icon illustration
Through Emilie’s playful approach, with step-by-step instructions, you will soon have a piece of Melbourne to hang on your wall!

- Paper – ideally watercolour paper or any thick paper
- Pencil
- Watercolours
- Brushes
- Some reference pictures of your favourite Melbourne icons
Who will be teaching?
Emilie is a Melbourne based artist and maker, currently finishing her PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts. She moved from France in 2014 and has been developing her art practice since, working with a range of media, from video to printmaking, 3D printing and a variety of paint mediums. Emilie is also a comic book artists. Her illustration has been published by the Lifted Brow, and she self-published her first graphic novel in 2018 with Tree Paper Comics in Melbourne.
