What’s it all about?

It’s likely that everything you know about absinthe is a lie. If you know absinthe as a bright green shot of alcohol to take at your 18th or 21st birthday party – prepare to discover a whole new world! Absinthe is more than a high proof alcohol of initiation into adult life.

Discover the history and tradition of absinthe – from its creation as an herbal remedy to it becoming a muse for artists like Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Discover the truth with your mistress of absinthe, Meagan.

What will we cover?

This session will cover:

  • The history and birthplace of absinthe
  • How absinthe is made and what’s in it
  • Why absinthe was banned for almost 100 years
  • Hallucinogenic properties of absinthe
  • The ritual of how to drink absinthe
  • Traditional absinthes
  • Modern absinthes (what’s available and how it’s made now)

What will you need?

Having absinthe on hand to drink is optional and you can still gain much enjoyment from this session though tasting notes as well as discussion of rituals and traditions.

If you would like to have real absinthe on hand for this session, the best available in Australia include varieties from:

  • Distillerie Les Fils
  • Demoiselle Distillery

Both could be available from quality independent bottleshops and potentially at your local Dan Murphys (best to call ahead to confirm stock).

Warning: Be cautious of other selections presented as “absinthe”.  Green Fairy is not genuine absinthe and is not suitable for this session.

Who will be teaching?

Join Meagan, your mistress of absinthe. Since falling in love with the Green Fairy more than 10 years ago she has imbibed her way around the world sharing stories of this misunderstood aperitif. For several years Meagan served absinthe at a boutique, specialist absinthe bar in Sydney – the first of its kind in Australia.  Her lust with La Fee Verte took her on the absinthe trail through France and Switzerland where she met and interviewed many of the best absinthe producers in the world.
