What’s it all about?
Do you love good stories, but sometimes find yourself wondering whether things could have gone differently? What if characters made different choices, what if it was set in a different context, what if you knew more of the backstory? Come along to this class to experiment with adapting stories, and perhaps create the beginnings of the next big adaptation!
What will we cover?
We will start by identifying some famous plays, books and movies that are adaptations of existing works. (Many of the world’s most-loved stories are creative re-tellings of existing stories: Shakespeare’s plays, the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, and many Disney movies, to name a few!) We will then explore what goes into the process of adaptation, and discover what makes adaptations powerful. Lastly, we will dive into the practical work of adaptation – deconstructing a well-known story and adapting it into something new on the spot!
Who will be teaching?
Aridhi Anderson is a theatre director, writer and performer with The Day Dream (Melbourne & New Delhi). Some of her recent works include {Parenthesis}, adapted from The Fisherman and His Wife by the Brothers Grimm; Ophelia’s Inner Monologue, adapted from Hamlet by William Shakespeare; and Jezebel, adapted from Biblical accounts of the interactions between Queen Jezebel and Elijah.
