What’s it all about?

Want to know more about ice hockey than what Emilio Estevez and his rag tag bunch of misfits taught you?

With the Sochi winter Olympics taking place next year, it’s time to learn more about the sport that has been played in Melbourne for over a hundred years. The 2013 Australian season has just begun with teams competing to win the third oldest ice hockey trophy in the world, the Goodall Cup.

You’ll come away with an understanding of Melbourne’s ice hockey history, how to get started in the hockey scene, and the ability to impress Canadians with more than your hilarious moose impersonation.

What will we cover?

We’ll be looking at:

  • How the game works – learn the rules so you can watch and understand a game
  • Gear and equipment – we’ll dress someone up and make sure they can’t feel a punch
  • The history of ice hockey worldwide and in Australia
  • Learning why it’s better to sit on the bench than in the box and whether you would deke or slapshot when you get into the house
  • The Melbourne scene – the Ice, the Mustangs and how to get started
  • The Mighty Ducks: help or hindrance, and
  • Try your hand at scoring a goal

Who will be teaching?

Brendan Parsons is an ice hockey tragic. Having picked up the sport in his mid-twenties he is now an amateur player, scorekeeper, coach, linesman and general rink rat.

At the expense of his promising engineering career, Brendan would like to dedicate more of his time brainwashing/teaching Melburnians about the sport he loves.
