What’s it all about?
Punk, Glam Rock, Youthquake, Gender Bender. You will have heard the terms, but do you really know what they mean?
Maybe you lived through them, but they seem like a long time ago. Or maybe you are a child of the 80’s. Either way, join this class for a rollicking ride through the 60s, 70s and 80s as we talk about how those particular decades have influenced how fashion and art are viewed today.
In an open, meandering discussion we will begin with the explosion of youth culture in the 1960s and finish in modern-day Melbourne, tracing the interplay of fashion, art and music along the way.
What will we cover?
The class will explore the way fashion and art are linked through cultural influences e.g.: Romanticism/Tribalism/Cubism/
We will also look at different subcultures which have developed across the world, particularly in Japan and New York. We will look at Graffiti Art and Fashion Performance Art as new-found forms of expression and discuss the sociological implications here in Melbourne.
An A4 file will be given to participants with photographs and images of what we will discuss.
Who will be teaching?
The teacher is Melwitz Folino. Melwitz is a Fashion / Illustration Lecturer working here in Melbourne.She is also an Artist working in Costume Design and Performance Art. She also has a studio in Northcote – “La Boudoir Dada” – where she teaches privately and welcomes all art practices. Her knowledge in the subject of Fashion and Art is broad and she has spent many years living and working on research in this area, both in Australia and in the UK, Italy and France.
