What’s it all about?

How do you take your coffee? Long, skinny, Fairtrade?

Despite being an option on many trendy Melbourne cafe menus, not that many people understand exactly what Fairtrade means. In fact, coffee is only just a part of it.

In a world where ‘your dollar is your vote’, this class will teach you what you are voting for when you walk down the supermarket aisle. In particular, we will focus on the Fairtrade certification scheme – how it works, what it covers, what the benefits are, and where it is heading next.

What will we cover?

Fairtrade is global network of organisations working together to further the idea of ‘fair trade’ and to improve the lives of farmers and workers in the developing world. The Fairtrade system aims to recorrect some of the imbalances of global trade by giving consumers and business the opportunity to partner with communities in the developing world.

In the class we will cover:

  • The Fair trade movement and ethical consumerism.
  • The Fairtrade Certification system.
  • Challenges and opportunities in the future.

Who will be teaching?

Daniel Mackey is Business Development Officer at Fairtrade Australia. Daniel works with businesses, NGOs and local governments to grow the Fairtrade movement and market in Australia. He is currently also completing his Masters in Trade at Monash University.
