What’s it all about?

In this class, you will be taken step by step to create your own lace-print ring with the “Lost wax casting” method.
Unlike some of the other silver classes you may have seen here, this one is a great beginner-friendly class and is taught in a step by step method where everyone completes at least a single piece by the end of the lesson. There is less freedom to “free form” your ring, but lots of hands-on guidance and it is a fantastic class for those who have never worked with this technique and are wanting to try it out for the first time.
You will be working to learn how to cut, shape and join waxes as well as learning how to imprint and design rings using provided materials.
* Please note that due to the way this lesson will be running, please do not come with expectations to make up designs that greatly differ from the image shown, if you prefer a more “free form” class, see “Lost wax casting – pendants and earrings” for more teaching flexibility.

What will we cover?

The class will take place over two weeks. In the first class we will learn:

  • What casting is
  • How to outsource to jewellery businesses
  • About different waxes
  • How to make a ring
  • How to clean up and finish cast pieces

Then in the second week we will take our freshly cast pieces and learn:

  • Different tools to use for polishing metal
  • Basic hand finish for silver

If you would like to polish your silver with power tools like a dremel, please bring a photo of your tools to the first class. We will be able to tell you if this is suitable to be used for metal polish in the second class.

Who will be teaching?

JennyJenny is a gift shop owner who has been creating her own pieces of jewellery for the past 5-odd years with paper being one of her favourite mediums to work with. Apart from jewellery making, she also has a background in interior design, merchandising and origami.
