What’s it all about?

Basket making as an age-old technique which can be applied to almost any material. In this class, you’ll find that even scraps uncovered from the streets of this incredible city can be turned into practical pieces of art. With waste being a major issue, turning rubbish into something resourceful is a worthwhile skill. No matter what your textile skills are, you’ll learn the essential techniques to create a unique basket made from foraged bits and pieces.

What will we cover?

Coiling is a simple technique to create a basket. You’ll learn a few simple ways to begin your basket, create different shapes, and join lengths of material together in order to continue weaving and to finish the basket.

In this workshop we will go through the basics of basket weaving:

  • How to start off your basket depending on what final shape you want.
  • How to make a solid base
  • How to stack up the coils to make the walls.

Demonstrate different materials you can use such as yarn, fabric, t-shirt yarn, raffia… We’ll have an assortment of materials for you to try. We’ll also go through a few upcycled options you can use to make your baskets more sustainable.
