What’s it all about?

Tell your story, your way. Melbourne is not only a City of Literature, but a City of Underground Literature, and it’s full of cutting edge independent publishers and zine makers. In this class, we’ll set you on your way to being part of this movement – showing some of the techniques and tricks to make your own zine in which you can tell your story, your way.

What will we cover?

We’ll look at numerous examples of zines including a couple made by Tim. Using just a few simple tools – paper, scissors, pen, glue sticks – you will be introduced to you to a range of techniques, from the very simple (fold and staple) to the more complicated (bookbinding) which you’ll be able to use to make your own zine. Finally, we’ll work on some ideas for a zine of your own, using writing prompts and spare material – the aim will be not to produce a finished product, but to give you a clear idea which you can perfect yourself, at your own time, in your own space. Most materials/tools will be available, but bring your ideas! A few zines will be available for sale after the workshop.

Who will be teaching?

Tim Train is a poet, spoken word artist, writer, zine maker, and just pTim Trainlain weirdo. He lives in Melbourne’s north, with two cats, a worm farm, a yeast colony, a yoghurt mother, two beehives, and six chickens, in a house that is clearly too small. His book, ‘Hangover Music’, was published in late 2018 by Ginninderra Press. You can find him on Facebook and Instagram.
