Kim:

Hi guys, we are Kim and Tom. We live in London now but we were there when Laneway Learning started almost five years ago as a hobby and as a way to meet interesting people.

Tom:

Since we left Melbourne we have been amazed at how Laneway Learning has continued to thrive and at the brilliant job Mark, Lucie and Maria have all done, taking it to the next level.

In particular, they have done loads of work professionalising Laneway Learning as it has grown and they’ve got an important and exciting announcement to make today.

Kim:

So we’d just like to say ‘well done’ to the team for making it happen, and wish you all many happy classes in the future. Over to the team!

Mark:

Hey guys, we’ve got some really exciting news for you today. It’s been a long time in the making but Laneway Learning is now officially a not-for-profit!

[Clapping]

Lucie:

When we started Laneway Learning it was just a side project, we volunteered most of our time, and we did it because we wanted to be able to learn some new things and share what we were passionate about.

Since then though it’s been growing bit-by-bit, very organically, and really it’s been you guys who’ve taken it to the next level and shown us just how excited you are to be able to learn some new things, meet some new people and also share what you’re passionate about as well.

Maria:

When I joined Laneway Learning one of the things that appealed most to me was the idea of community and how close it felt, not only between us but also between the teachers, students, venue managers, and some great friendships have come out of it. I really love how it’s still the focus of everything we do: community, as well as other values like being affordable, accessible and adding a bit of quirkiness to the classes and the topics we choose. And I think that the teachers have been really great at offering us amazing, amazing things.

Lucie:

I think we have to say thanks to the teachers for that! And, actually, just thanks to everybody who’s helped us get to this point. So not just the teachers but the venues that we work with, the people who’ve helped us organise Laneway Learning in Melbourne and in other cities and, of course, yourselves as the students.

Mark:

And I suppose you’re asking what does this mean for you? Well, nothing! It’s just going to continue exactly as it has done. We’ll hopefully be doing many more classes now and expanding, doing more interesting and quirky collaborations.

Maria:

Yeah, we hope to be here for five, ten, twenty years, or as long as you want to keep learning.

Lucie:

I guess we’ll see you at a class!
