What’s it all about?
Have you ever wondered why typographers have strange tendencies toward the obsessive?
Take this type drawing class for the opportunity to explore the true mindset of the typographer and use pencil and paper to explore the endless possibilities afforded by the coding system of shapes and counter shapes that we refer to as an alphabet. Sharpen your type skills, find out how type actually works and ponder whether there is such a thing as good and bad typography. You could even bring your friends and rivals to draw some letters competitively.
What will we cover?
In this class we are first going to use pencil and paper to draw our own letters to provide insight and knowledge into the construction and crafting of type and letters as a writing system. We will then learn how to kern like a professional while exploring the difference between optical and measured letter spacing.
In particular, we will learn:
- A basic understanding of type anatomy and terms
- Understanding of contrasts in type and letter forms
- Basic type and letter drawing skills.
- You will draw a series of characters which you will then refine and kern to perfection.
As a group we will evaluate the success of your individual hand generated creations!
