Make Your Own Reusable String Bag

What’s it all about?

Let’s face it, green bags are made cheaply out of the cheapest materials available because they know that we won’t pay more than a dollar or two for them. We put them through hard use on a regular basis, and they break much more quickly than we would like, wearing holes in thin fabric, or splitting at the seams. But what if we could make our own simple shopping bags that would last much longer and can be mended without the need for special equipment?

Come along to this class and make a new shopping bag to take to the markets!

What will we cover?

In this class we will begin work on making own own string shopping bag. Materials and instructions will be provided, and we will be guided through the process of knotting string bags, a skill that can be transferred to making many other string items including water-bottle holders, nets, and hammocks.

The session will focus on learning to make a string bag, design options, how to make handles, and mending string bags.

Who will be teaching?

Laura SmithLaura’s grandma taught her to knit a million years ago. Since moving on from knitting scarves in pink wool she’s taken the traditional skill to strange and wonderful places, including knitted woollen beards, knitting metal chainmaille jewellery and now knotting string bags on boats!
