What is it all about?

If you’ve ever tinkered with making your own jewellery, wanted to own a 3D-printed metal creation or been interested in colouring metals, then this is the workshop for you. Discover how oxidising titanium in a controlled way produces different coloured surface coatings, then anodise your pieces to the colour(s) of your choice*. Best of all, the techniques we will cover on the night can be repeated at home without any special equipment. * subject to the laws of physics – not all colours available.

What will we cover?

In this workshop, we will be using household materials to apply coloured coatings to titanium. Each participant will take home two titanium jewellery pieces – one simple strip pendant, and one 3D printed ‘Bathsheba ball’ (courtesy of CSIRO’s additive manufacturing facility – Lab 22). Along the way we’ll learn where the different colours come from and how to control the conditions to produce the desired colour. ‘How to’ notes will be provided for participants to continue their titanium adventures at home.

Who will be teaching it?

CaitlinCaitlin’s day job is with CSIRO Education, which sees her out and about in schools and public spaces across Victoria sharing the joys of science. She has also been dabbling in jewellery design for around 10 years, mainly working in silver and precious metal clay. This workshop is particularly exciting for her as it combines her love of jewellery making with her background in chemistry and materials science.
