What’s it all about?
History can feel very lonely for women. Especially art history – at a glance, it’s as if we didn’t exist until 50 years ago! But it’s not true: women have always always made art, and we have always been prolific, influential and inspired!
More than Muses is an empowering class, that places women back into the history that sometimes forgets them. The class pays homage to those who came before us. It also a reassuring reminder of the ongoing history of strong, clever women artists – a history that is still being written.
What will we cover?
The class is part storytelling and part conversation. It is designed to empower people to understand the important role that women have played in art history, and to speak confidently about the topic.
We will take a whirlwind tour through art history – looking at a few specific artistic periods, and learning about the women that helped shape them. We will have a chance to share our own thoughts and feelings about our favourite women artists, and to talk about our experiences of viewing their work. Together, we will share our own favourite women artists and get a personalised timeline of women artists in history to take home. The class will end with a review of exciting upcoming shows and artistic events that are made by or focus on women artists.
Who will be teaching?
Sophia Dacy-Cole is an artist, art writer and activist. She is currently studying a Masters of Fine Art at Monash University.
