Perhaps no other issue inspires such diverse passions and contradictions as the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. If you are interested in filling in some of your knowledge gaps about one of the most discussed and debated conflicts of all time, then this is for you!
What will we cover?
In this class you’ll get an overview of the history and drivers of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict beginning with the founding of Zionism in the late 19th century, through the early vacillations of the great powers to the formation of the State of Israel in 1948 and subsequent wars in 1967 and 1973. We’ll also take a look at varying rationales behind some of the major barriers to peace – the occupation, the right of return, security, religious fundamentalism and the split within the Palestinian Authority. You will also have a chance to ask all those delicate questions you’ve been too afraid to ask at dinner parties!
Who will be teaching?
Marika Sosnowski has taught Middle East politics at university, written about the region for numerous publications and is an international development consultant focussing on Israel/Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. She is also a regular guest on Melbourne radio station Triple R.
