What’s it all about?

Come and learn all about Australia’s famous gem – the opal! You will be taught by an expert in the opal industry, you will have a chance to browse the shop and you will even get to snap some pictures of you and your friends holding some of our snakes and lizards straight from the outback!

What will we cover?

Join us for a glimpse into the world of opals as we teach you all about Australia’s famous gem. You will have a chance to see how the opal is cut into stones for jewellery, you will learn about the various locations throughout Australia where opals are mined, and we will show you the different types of opal and teach you how to identify them based on their unique characteristics. In addition, you will have a chance to pet and hold our critters from the outback as well as get to dig for your own free opal.

Who will be teaching?

Nick1 (1)Nick LeSouef has been a part of the world of opals for over 50 years. He is the founder of Lighting Ridge Opal Mines and continues to play an active role in running the family owned business along with his children Atheka and Jonas. In addition to his wealth of insight in the jewellery industry, his knowledge and experience stems from his hands on experience in mining and cutting opal. Having travelled throughout Australia and different parts of the world learning about opals Nick is by far a master and expert in all things opal and is always excited to share his knowledge with others. We invite you to join Nick as he guides you through your discovery of the world of opals.
