What’s it all about?

Do you look at fancy, swirly handwriting with awe? Wish you knew how to do it yourself? We’ve got you covered in this introduction to hand lettering techniques using calligraphy.

What will we cover?

We will learn how to improve on our hand skills (beyond pushing the buttons), and look at alternative ideas and approaches to creating and manipulating letterforms and typography. We’re going to use firsthand interactions to make letters become tangible, exciting, important, meaningful, and even sexy!

Starting with the basics of how to use a flat edge pen, we will construct, deconstruct and draw strong letterforms. Along the way we’ll also increase our understanding of the structure of typography via the calligraphic script that served as the model for Roman lowercase letters and all of today’s typography and letterforms.

Who will be teaching?

This workshop is brought to you by Melbourne’s rebellious design school, Old School the New School for Graphic Design and Typography. The teacher is the School’s creative spirit Veronica Grow who has a wealth of experience teaching design degree students at RMIT the craft of typography, and also teaches hand made lettering and typography at Old School.
