What’s it all about?

“Made with real fruit”, “No artificial colours or flavours”, “Good source of calcium”; what do these nutritional claims really mean and how do they affect my health? For as long as food has been packaged in shiny boxes, colourful cans and glossy bottles food manufacturers have tempted us to choose their brand, desire their food and crave their drinks.

This workshop will bestow you with turbo-X-ray vision to decode and ignore the tricks and traps of food marketing. Learn how marketers push the truth, twist regulations and use our fears and desires to lure us into the sparkly web of food advertising.

What will we cover?

We will:

  • Learn to understand sneaky tricks used by food marketers to entice us to buy their products.
  • Decode health and nutritional claims and understand how a sugary cereal can claim to be a “good source of fibre”.
  • Differentiate between information and misinformation.
  • Appreciate the infinite and omnipresent powers of a “celebrity endorsement” – from Oprah to Gwyneth to Beyoncé.
  • Learn how to ignore marketing, propaganda and advertising and make up your own mind!
